Scenes of Bearwood, Smethwick and Warley - Henry Challis self guided heritage walk

Henry Challis was a local painter and resident of the Warley and Smethwick areas who documented the areas changes through the creation of various paintings’ with some being held by Sandwell Museums Service.

To celebrate and promote these paintings, Sandwell Archives, in conjunction with Sandwell Museums Service, is in the process of creating ‘the Challis Walk’. This is a self guided walk around Smethwick and Bearwood which will take the walkers to the modern places where the subjects of his paintings originally stood and will allow them to compare, contrast and comprehend how much the area has developed and changed.

The aim of this walk is to showcase the work of a respected local painter, promote health and exercise and to offer cultural enrichment. In addition to the walk, Sandwell Archives Local Studies Librarian will be offering a talk on Henry Challis which will be advertised shortly, look out for more information on our social media.

We are currently working hard to bring this walk and talk to life, so as a part of national Heritage Open Days we are asking you to try out our brand new Challis trail and complete our feedback form so we can make it even better. You can pick up a trail at Wednesbury Museum, Sandwell Archives or Thimblemill Library and Haden Hill House from 6th September.
