How local Quakers changed society
Our exhibition this year is about the life of George Fox and other Local Quakers who made a difference to society.
400 years since George Fox was born. He started the Society of Friends, commonly called Quakers because they used to sometimes ‘quake’ before ministering.
The movement began in Lancashire and was spread around the world by early Quakers who suffered greatly, some losing their lives- because they were non-conformist. They were persecuted by the English authorities and by other countries too. Some early missionaries to the America were hanged. Other countries were courteous and listened to them and engaged with them.
Quakers stood up for what they believed in. From those early beginnings, standing up against the English authorities, to more modern times when many were conscientious objectors, Quakers were often in the forefront of social movements.
It was a local man, - Eric Baker who , with others founded Amnesty International. There are many others, less known but influential, nevertheless.
Come and see our exhibition and have a look around the Meeting House.
The building is over 200 years old, has a few architectural features including a listed interior, and a peaceful atmosphere. Come and look at the exhibition and sit in the silence.
