Portland's Green Corridor and Cobra Cafe - projected images / video with live music
The Former Drill Hall, Easton Lane, Portland, Dorset, DT5 1HP
An evening of projected images and live music from Cobra Cafe, with refreshment break, will highlight the creation of Portland’s Green Corridor, just given planning permission by Dorset Council.
The Green Corridor features the environmental regeneration of 7 key areas with highlights at various rest stops. You'll find examples like World Heritage stromatolites, which were among the earliest oxygen-producing organisms, and views of today’s soil bed that reveal the geomorphological foundation under our delicate ecological layer. There are Jurassic-era lagoon environments where dragonflies had an 18-inch wingspan, terrestrial landscapes housing ancient fossil forests and trees, and rivers lined with dinosaur footprints. You’ll also spot evidence of once-drying rivers and salt lakes on dry land, and ancient seas filled with fossilized sea creatures, including Portland’s rich ammonite record. Each step feels like traveling a million years back in time, ultimately leading you to the Jurassic sea floor at the quarry. Here, a Grade II Listed Arch, saved from 81 Fleet Street, serves as both a welcoming gateway for skills training and a passage into deep geological history, all curated by the Trust over the past four decades through the area’s quarrying activities.
