Outwood People and Their Memorial Hall

Victoria Street, Outwood, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, WF1 2NE

  • 08 Sep 2024
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

Fundraising began in 1948 with events and public subscriptions to build the Hall as a WW2 Memorial. We will display unique documents and images about the people who made it happen and the people and groups using it in its early days and now.

The exhition which tells the story of the Memorial Hall is going to be focussed on the people who made it happen, starting with those who organised fundraising events in the difficult years just after WW2. Records not previously made public will be available to view. Early records include the cash book for the Outwood Memorial Hall Fund, the Nominal Roll of Membership and Subscription Record and details of the opening ceremony. We also have the benefit of an account entitled "Outwood Memorial Hall - How It Began" written by Des Moore who is credited with doing so much for the Hall and Outwood generally. Outwood Video Club made a number of films in and about the hall and these will be on show. The last exhibits will look at the users of the hall today and the people who are involved as trustees and volunteers to ensure that it remains operational for many years to come.
