Monton Unitarian Church Open Day

Monton Green, Eccles, Manchester, Greater Manchester, M30 9NX

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

The church, designed by Thomas Worthington and home to wonderful stained glass windows illustrating some of the Unitarian ethos, will be open for you to explore, with artefacts on display, talks, music, and a cafe.

Monton Unitarian Church was designed by Thomas Worthington, opened in 1875, and is the fourth religious building for dissenters on this site. A beautiful building, the church is particularly noteworthy for its late 19th century stained glass windows which honour not just Jesus and other biblical figures, but also great men of both the classical and modern world. Artists, writers, scientists and philosophers are represented.

A guide to the church windows and other historical details will be available, along with various artifacts from our historical archives, such as old record books, and silverware. Of particular note are some handwritten and signed original letters and plans by Thomas Worthington himself, and the minute books from the 1870s recording all the decisions to do with the building and design of the church.

There will be displays on the themes of Routes (our industrial links with the mills via trains and canals), Networks (our church is networked with many local organisations) and Connections (illustrating our links with Unitarians and Universalists around the world).

In addition our LGBTQ+ history will be celebrated with our national exhibition called Unitarian LGBT+ Voices.

Saturday 14th - 2pm talk, 4pm Jennifer Reid concert of traditional industrial revolution songs.
Sunday 15th - service 10.45am, talk 2pm.
Both days open from 10am, closing 6pm on Saturday, 3pm on Sunday.
