Explore the Grade I listed church of St Leonard dates from 1100 and was rebuilt 1412 incorporating Norman arches and enlarged 1524.

Notable history, including Flodden Memorial Window of 1515 and rare brasses, including Major General Ralph Assheton in full Cromwellian uniform. Many stained glass windows including two art-deco windows by Christopher Whall. Connections with Cardinal Thomas Langley who became Prince Bishop of Durham as well as Saint Cuthbert and Alexander Nowell, who became Dean of St Pauls in the reign of Elizabeth I. The Assheton Family were Lords of the Manor, including Sir Richard Assheton who was knighted after Flodden. The Hopwood family have a 17th century enclosed pew. To celebrate 500 year anniversary since the last major building event of 1524, there will be extra events such as brass rubbing, face painting and displays during the weekends.

While in Middleton you can also visit the Arts and Craft Long Street Methodist Church, have lunch from 12 noon at the oldest original pub in Greater Manchester: The Old Boars Head 1632 and view the exterior of the only original Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in the country dating from 1584. All of these in close proximity to St Leonard's Church.
