Mersea Roman Barrow

Roman burial Mound dated 100 - 120 AD. Before being led in, visitors will receive a short informative and illustrated talk. Visitors can then enter the burial chamber by means of a narrow, gated door into a corridor with low level lighting. There are a few steps down into the actual chamber room which can hold up to ten people on a tour. There is also an opportunity for able bodied people to climb to the top of the Mound, through the trees to get an idea of it's height and position relative to the mainland. There is a booklet that can be purchased at the site and there are illustrated information boards at the free car park and inside the chamber. The Mersea Museum will be open on these two days 14th and 15th September 2024 between 1000 and 1600.
