The event explores the history of the Shorncliffe Garrison and its multicultural links. Visitors can view the military landscape, and see how military needs have changed over the years, and how our history is linked with that of the rest of the world

Shorncliffe Garrison has been an important military base for over 200 years. Home of Light Infantry it has also been home to soldiers from around the world. This years events tells those stories. The Shorncliffe Trust will be explaining the evolvement of a military garrison over 200 years. Almost forgotten about and unmarked for over a century, the site has been interpreted and plotted by the Shorncliffe Trust's chairman Christopher Shaw.

The land at Shorncliffe Camp is rich in archaeological remains relating to the military use of the site over some two centuries. The archaeological potential of these remains is high and the overall significance of the site is high. Some archaeological remains are currently under threat and require attention.

The visit begins at the Gurkha Visitor centre where you wioll hear about the hisoty of the site, including the 200 year old redoubt, there are also buildings from the Victorian and Edwardian Era (not accessible) but visible . Also WWI practice trenches and a WWII pill box.

Trust will have various photographs, documents and artefacts so visitors can help interpret the remains.

These sessions will march people back to the past, maybe even refight the battles

Directions:
The post code is to the Gurkha Visitor Centre, where there is parking. There will be people around to direct you to where the events are happening. Please do not attempt to enter the military areas unless directed to do so.

Accessibility details

Due to the nature of the site then it is not suitable for those who are not able bodied. There are uneven paths , some steep slopes and rough uneven ground. It can be very wet and muddy and therefore slippery. Please wear sensible footwear and appropriate clothing for the weather conditions on the day. Please stay with the guide at all times and follow instructions carefully. In the event of bad weather the Trust may have to cancel all or some of these activities as it may not be safe to include them. Their are no toilet facilities at the site

Additional information

The site is still a busy military camp and is fenced off and not accessible, please do not attempt to do so. All visitors should follow rules regarding parking and the road, visitors should be aware of traffic at all times. children are welcome. Not suitable for very young children or buggies. Everyone is encouraged to ask questions and take photographs.
