Visit the restored 18th century Howsham Mill, now generating hydro-electricity and an environmental education centre.

Howsham Mill is situated in a beautiful location on a small island in the River Derwent, where grain was processed for flour production and animal feed for hundreds of years, using the power of water. It was designed as a folly or eye-catcher in the grounds of Howsham Hall. It became redundant after the second world war and fell into disrepair. Its restoration was completed in 2013 and the mill was given a new purpose - generation of hydro-electricity from two Achimedes Screw turbines and the waterwheel. Income from the sale of electricity funds visits by primary school children to learn about renewable power, the environment and enjoy outdoor activities. The mill is also used for many other events.
