Halesworth's Industrial Past & Millennium Green Guided Walk
Town centre car park, Saxons Way, Halesworth, Suffolk, IP19 8BF
Paul and Shirley Taylor of the Halesworth to Southwold Narrow Gauge Railway Charity will lead these guided walks around part of the Halesworth Millennium Green (the largest such Green in the country), highlighting the industrial archaeology of the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries: the 1761 Blyth Navigation and the 1879 narrow gauge Halesworth to Southwold Railway.
Our walk takes in the Town Park, the remains of the Navigation, the New Cut and its lock and towpath, before making our way to the still well preserved trackbed of the railway at Bird's Folly, where the Charity has relaid rails on the main line and at the locomotive shed site. The Society plans to re-create this iconic Victorian railway as a heritage attraction and, ultimately, a means of transport.
