Footsteps of Furniss

William T. Furniss was an accomplished photographer who captured views of Sheffield and local people over 100 years ago. He is buried in Wardsend Cemetery, a hidden haven rich in heritage and nature, just 15 minutes walk from Hillsborough Park.

Start at Hillsborough Park where the Friends of Wardsend Cemetery will showcase Furniss' photographs in a booklet that also encourages a self-guided walk from Hillsborough Park to Wardsend Cemetery Heritage Park. At Hillsborough Park, Loxley Silver Band will be performing at 11am, recreating a Furniss photograph of the Band in Hillsborough Park taken in 1907. There will also be an activity sheet for young people to engage with, sparking creativity and photography.

Then, visit Wardsend Cemetery where you can explore an outdoor exhibition showcasing Furniss' work from the Sheffield Musical Union World Tour which will transport visitors around the world through his photographs.

You can enter Hillsborough Park from a number of entrances. The closest to access Coach House Forecourt (Depot Bakery) is from Middlewood Road.

Accessibility details

Hillsborough Park is fully accessible. Depot Bakery has an accessible toilet and access to refreshments. If you choose to visit Wardsend Cemetery Heritage Park, it is NOT fully accessible. There is step access to the cemetery and the ground is uneven and overgrown in many areas. However, the outdoor exhibition will be kept on the main path. We hope to find a solution to accessibility in the near future.
