Exeter Pre-Prep School, The Avenue, Exminster, Exeter, Devon, EX6 8AT
Originally built as the chapel for Exminster Hospital, formerly Devon County Lunatic Asyulm, which was located at the end of The Avenue. The architect was Joseph Neale of Exeter, and the chapel was finished in 1875. It was built using Heavitree red brecchia stone and Bathstone and has steeply pitched slate roofs in the French Gothic style. The building was Grade II listed in 1985 as “a fine example of a complete chapel of its date with high-quality fittings and notable carvings”. These include the unique six-sided pulpit with trefoil-headed panels with diaper carving (engraving), divided by marble shafts. Stained-glass was used for all the original windows and many of these remain intact. The east window and others were designed by Mr F Drake of Exeter; some others by Messrs. Horwood Bros. of Frome. The west windows depict the healing of the sick. The chapel was converted into a school in 1992. A good deal of restoration and repair work was needed, as the building had been left abandoned for many years. Originally, there were three classrooms and a library area. In the late '90s, two extensions and a tennis court were added. In 2021, the building was fully refurbished when it came under the ownership of Exeter School.
