Cresswell Battles for Britain

Cresswell, Morpeth, Cresswell Pele Tower, Morpeth, Northumberland, NE61 5JU

  • 15 Sep 2024
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

Join us in discovering the many roles played by ordinary people during wartime, those "ordinary heroes" of the home front and learn about our home-grown Hero, who played a key part in cracking the German Code.

The Northeast seldom appears in any of the war films, but it played a huge part in WW2.

With a potential site for Axis landings, local training bases for pilots, ships built on the Tyne and post-war internment sites, there is a lot of wartime history nearby but hidden.

Indeed, our own, tiny village, can lay claim to one of those events that Hollywood tried to emulate, and the leading star in capturing the Enigma Machine, described by King George as "the single most important naval engagement of the war".

We will have song and dance, food and drink (rations permitting) as well as celebrating the various roles locals played on the Home Front, all taking place in our newly renovated "Dig for Victory" garden There will be lots for all ages to explore, including our 14th century Pele Tower, a rat hunt and, of course, dressing up. That's not compulsory, but you are very welcome to come along dressed in period costume.
