Chesham Mosque

A purpose-built mosque, opened in 2005, to serve the long-established Muslim community in Chesham. The total cost of the construction work was £1.6 million, all of which was raised from donations and collections. The mosque contains two prayer rooms with a total capacity for 700. Female Muslims use the facilities on the ground floor, while men use the upper prayer room. The interiors are impressive with the upper prayer chamber having a spectacular dome with inscriptions around its perimeter.

Guided tours of the mosque and explanations of the Islamic faith and beliefs will be held throughout the day. The mosque welcomes questions from the public in order to engender a mutual understanding of faiths and cultures and to help nurture a local community that is proud of its diversity.

Visitors are requested to remove their shoes in specific areas, to keep food and drink out of the Mosque, except in designated areas, to keep the building and courtyard clean by disposing of litter properly, and to not smoke anywhere on the site. All adult visitors and children over the age of twelve are respectfully requested to observe modest dress when visiting the Mosque. In general this means covering one's arms and legs as much as possible (avoiding sleeveless tops/vests, shorts, skirts above the knee). Some visitors choose to cover their heads, but this is entirely optional.
