Bradstone Tour and Tea
St Nonna's Church, Bradstone, Tavistock, Devon, PL19 0QS
This free guided tour, led by a local volunteer, starts at Bradstone Great Barn and leads you over to St Nonna's Church. Here's a little of the history to give you a flavour of the tour.
The medieval hamlet of Bradstone is full of history. It probably predated its Saxon (Old English) name which it takes from the ‘bradanstane’ .. broad stone… Bradstone.. which still lies in the hamlet and which is considered to be an ancient standing stone or menhir. Ordgar, a Saxon nobleman, first used the name in 971 when, lying sick here he frees 10 slaves.
King Harold owned the Manor of Bradstone before the Conquest indicating that it was a place of some importance.
The church was dedicated in 1261, 2nd October by Bishop Walter Bronescombe and remained active until 1996. You will see a wonderful Green Man in the roof of the entrance porch.
The Manor House with its Gatehouse was built by the Cloberry who had inherited it in the 13th century.
The present Manor House and the Gatehouse were built by the Cloberry Family in the early 17th century.
The tour finishes at the Great Barn where there will be a pop up cafe with tea and cake (donations welcome).
