In the 1960s the now infamous Beeching Report proposed closure of the East Suffolk Line between Lowestoft and Ipswich. Trevor Garrod, Chair of the East Suffolk Travel Association gives a fascinating insight into the groups campaign to save the line.

Dr Beeching proposed closure of many thousands of miles of railways, leaving many communities cut off from the rail network. When proposals to close the line between Lowestoft and Ipswich were announced, the East Suffolk Travellers Association (now East Suffolk Travel Association) was formed to successfully fight the closure, enabling the residents and visitors to reach Lowestoft and Ipswich and provide a lifeline to communities at intermediate stations along the route including Beccles, Halesworth, Saxmundham and Woodbridge. Trevor Garrod, Chair and lifelong pubic transport champion gives a fascinating insight into how this community group saved the line.
