Join us for the first in a series of mini talks and tours in The Street Benefice, Ryedale, focusing on the Victorian restoration of a series of fascinating historic churches, led by Dr Dav Smith, buildings archaeologist from the University of York.
Discover the story of the Rev. Charles Pierrepont Peach who led the local community to fund the restoration of the church by subscription in 1871, with the sometimes controversial Victorian architect, George Fowler Jones. Enjoy free coffee and refreshments before Dr Smith leads you on a guided tour of the church and explains how buildings archaeologists put together the jigsaw puzzle of architectural fragments, including lost elements of window tracery discovered in the churchyard, and archival sources deposited in dusty record offices. Discover the significance of fragments of architectural stone cemented into the church porch and learn more about the church’s medieval bell from the Diocese of York’s bell expert, John Arthur.
Families can take advantage of an infant feeding station and entertain youngsters with an I-Spy activity. If you are planning your own church repair project you can also come along and meet the team who have led its recent restoration.

- All our churches can be found in a straight line running along the B1257 - a Roman road known as the Street, connecting the Roman fort at Malton to an impressive villa at Hovingham. We start from 1000 at Amotherby church (YO17 6TN). From 1200 we'll be at Barton le Street village hall and St. Michael and All Angels church. From 1400 we'll be at Slingsby All Saints (YO62 4AD) and from 1530 at Hovingham All Saints. Parking is on local village streets around the churches.
