A Great Day Out in Clifford, Visit St Luke’s as part of a Trio of Churches
St Luke’s Church, Bramham Road, Clifford, Wetherby, West Yorkshire, LS23 6JQ
St Luke’s Church, Clifford Methodist Church and St Edward’s RC Church will be open on 9 September.
The small village of Clifford, listed in the Doomsday Book, is outstanding for its spiritual heritage. It began with the Quakers and resulted in the three churches of different Christian traditions found in Clifford today. Together, they connect to share a fascinating history. Clifford’s story is told through the landmarks you will find when you visit. The beautiful church tower of St Edward’s soars into the sky, celebrating the historic shift from political turmoil during the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, through Victorian industrialisation to Clifford’s vibrant community of today. Enjoy learning during your visit how the Romanesque and Gothic Revival architecture was found in two of the churches, with the Victorian Wesleyan chapel nestled between them. All three tell the stories of the people who built them separately then, but today, they come together as Christians who pray, debate and fundraise for local and global causes. Hear how each parish tells its story by recounting its history and expressing it with music and art. Sit on the bench in front of St Luke’s and see the view over Clifford and the resplendent renovated Tower of St Edward’s. Visit the three war graves in St Luke’s Churchyard and listen to a talk on St Luke’s art and artefacts, music including organ recital on listed organ and view the art and crafts made by members of our congregation .
