50 Years Restoration Celebration - Marple Locks Heritage Open Day

Marple Welcome Station, Marple Locks, Lockside, Marple, Greater Manchester, SK6 6BN

  • 15 Sep 2024
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

Come celebrate Marple's rich heritage and immerse yourself in a range of free activities! From canoeing, to heritage walks, historic boat display, lock demonstrations, family crafts and much more! There really is something here for everybody!

Completed in 1804, Marple Lock Flight consists of 16 canal locks and is one of the steepest flights in Britain. No longer needed for commercial use, the locks became impassable by the 1960's. But with huge thanks to many dedicated canal enthusiasts, the flight was saved, restored and re-opened in 1974. So come celebrate with us, the rich history we have on our doorstep and the 50 years since this magnificent flight was re-opened!

There will be activities across 3 sites:
Marple Social & Forces Club: Where we will show local historical displays and artefacts of the locks over the years. Family activities, such as crafts and build a canal, plus we will be showing our specially commissioned CGI film detailing the legacy of Samuel Oldknow, arguably the man who made Marple, the town we know and love today. Our heritage walks will also start from here.

The Toll house / Marple Wharf Warehouse: Where our canoeing sessions will take place. Meet the experts involved in The Wharf Marple CIC to hear and see the incredible restoration of the warehouse and learn more about the Grade 2 listed building and it's imminent plans. Pop into our Toll House and see the imagery of the area from over the years. Come see our volunteers demonstrate how the locks work along the flight.

Tramway Wharf: Find out about the history of the Wharf, admire the numerous historic boats on display and find out more from the experts available, about the history of each boat and their use over the years.
