200 Years of Connecting People
Leeds Road, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, WF1 2JL
The Church Institute on the Leeds Road at the heart of Outwood has an interesting history of it's own having in the beginning a role as a school as well as a social centre. Many happy events for the community have been held here and to this day many groups still enjoy its facilities including Outwood pre school, scouts , cubs and brownies. A variety of events are held relating to the Churh Opposite and various other groups use it.
For this Heritage Open Day it is being used as a venue to provide information about St Mary Magdalene Church in Outwood and the other Churches in the North Wakefield Benefice all of whom celebrate major anniversaries either this year or next. St Peters at Stanley celebrates the 200th anniversary of its foundation on September 6th and St Pauls at Alverthorpe reaches the same landmark next year. Both these churches are so called "Million Pound Fund" churches built after the victory at Waterloo and paid for by a fund allocated by the government for the purpose of increasing church capacity. St Annes at Wrenthorpe celebrated its 150th anniversary a few weeks ago.
If someone were to estimate the number of people who have benefitted from the facilities offered by these churches over these years, taking account of regular services, christenings, weddings and funerals it would no doubt be a staggering number. The exhibition will include the materials generated by the churches for their anniversary celebrations.
