Over 50 countries across Europe take part in the joint initiative by the Council of Europe & European Union. Each runs the festival a little differently but all aim to bring you new, often exclusive, opportunities to explore our fantastic heritage. This year the European theme is the ‘Heritage of Routes, Networks and Connections’, so look out particularly for events exploring the pathways and practices that link and influence us.


Scotland – Doors Open Days

Throughout September - Organised by Scottish Civic Trust with Scottish Archaeology Month

Faith & community - A warm welcome awaits at this Sunni mosque, which has been serving the local community for over two decades. Discover more about their current work and historic links through tours, talks and an exhibition.

Northern Ireland – European Heritage Open Days

14-15 September - Organised by Dept. for Communities

World of books - Explore Belfast’s oldest library. Tours will give you a fascinating insight into the treasured collection of this iconic institution, plus learn a little about the rich history of the building.

Wales - Open Doors Days

Throughout September - Organised by CADW

Ruthin walk - Follow in the footsteps of the women who signed the 1923 Women’s Peace Petition. This special walk will be led by textile artist Bethan M Hughes and look at some of the art inspired by the women’s stories.

Europe in England

Europe is a wonderful melting pot of peoples and cultures. Here are just two of the events in England celebrating our wider connections.

A Taste of Ukraine – Enjoy a special evening celebrating the cultural traditions and connections between Ukraine and Cornwall. Twin events offer you the chance to sample delicious food from two cultures, join in with a traditional dance, and sing along in a live link up between the twinned towns of Liskeard and Kopychyntsi.

The making of Norwich

Descend beneath the busy streets for this immersive event exploring the stories of those that helped make the city. Specifically the tales of ‘The Strangers’, refugees whose weaving skills brought wealth and prosperity to Norwich. (Image: The Shoebox Experiences)
