December: Reflection and Review

The year is drawing to a close but the Heritage Open Days cycle continues. As the nights draw in it is pleasant to recall and enjoy memories of late summer days and especially of the past year’s Heritage Open Days event. It’s a chance to consider plans and ideas for the future, particularly for next year’s Heriatge Open Days weekend.

Some Questions to Set You Thinking . . .

What was really successful last year? Was there anything that didn’t work well? How would/could you change it? Are there other exhibitions or displays you feel would improve your offer? Are there other buildings locally that you’d like to see opened? Are there any audience groups you would like to reach? How can you attract them? How can the Heritage Open Days team at English Heritage help you? How can you help us? Any ideas for next year’s workshops will be gratefully received.

Case Studies

The Hard Work is All Worthwhile

“Heritage Open Days is a great event for many reasons - not least that it is free! It can therefore be enjoyed by everyone, no matter what their circumstances. It takes creativity and persistence to organise the programme, especially developing new ideas each year, and would be impossible without our enthusiastic volunteers. When the time comes for all the events to take place though, all teh hard work is worthwhile, as people are fascinated and so appreciative of all the opportunities offered.” Marie Claire Robson, Gateshead Council, Tyne & Wear
